The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found in a vacant field on Thursday.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after human remains were found in a vacant field on Thursday.

A sheriff’s office news release says deputies responded to Hawaiian Village Drive just before 2 p.m. in response to a call from a citizen who told them he was walking through the field when he found a human hip bone.

“The citizen reported that he had picked the bone up and taken it home with him but returned to the field to show the deputies where the bone was located,” the release said.

Deputies say investigators responded and searched the field, but no additional remains were found.

The bone will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Crime Lab to be examined in an attempt to determine the identity of the person.

Deputies say the bone is not related to any recent missing persons cases “as it has been determined that the bone has been there for some time.”

Call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at (478) 751-7500 or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME if you have information.
