MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) says an officer was assaulted on Wednesday while attempting to escort an inmate into Atrium Health Navicent.

It happened around 11:30 a.m., according to Joan Heath, the Director of the GDC’s Office of Public Affairs.

Heath said in an email Central State Prison inmate Carey McLeod assaulted one of his accompanying officers and managed to gain control of the officer’s holster. He did not succeed in drawing the weapon.

Another officer on the scene drew her weapon and commanded McLeod drop the holster and lay on the ground. McLeod complied.

The assaulted officer was treated for minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported.

McLeod was taken back to Central State Prison.

“We are proud of our Officers and their quick actions that prevented the situation from escalating and we are also grateful to the Atrium Navicent staff for their assistance during the incident,” Heath wrote.
