Local High School Gets Big Money to Promote Safe Prom

For some students in Middle Georgia, prom night is right around the corner.

This year Baldwin County High School will make it a prom night to remember, with the help of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia and the Washington EMC Foundation.

“I’m really excited, I already got my dress, my shoes, everything,” said 12th grader Tiffany Beckom.

“Being my senior year I get to be with all my friends and have a good time and have a good memory,” said Dane Davey.

While most kids are thinking about their plans for before and after the big night, there’s one thing these students say they won’t be doing.

“I don’t do alcohol, plus it messes you up…you do stuff you don’t even remember when you’re drinking,” said Beckom.

Alcohol free prom nights are growing in popularity, with the help of the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia. This year, the organization chose the Baldwin Braves and presented them with a check for $2500 for activities promoting an alcohol free prom.

“The reality is we know, where there’s a will there’s a way…we want to take the will away,” said Vice President of POAG Stephen Adams.

Prom night may be the highlight of the senior year experience, but it shouldn’t be the end. Spreading the word about alcohol free proms could save a life.

Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee says, “We’ve been very blessed here in Baldwin County in the last few years we have not had any tragedies that’s why we’re trying to be proactive work with POAG and we hope that we don’t have any kind of bad problems.”
