CRISP COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A woman is in custody after a high-speed chase Saturday night led to a crash and the hospitalization of four people, including the woman who was driving.

A Crisp County Sheriff’s Office news release says it happened just before 10:30 Saturday night.

That’s when the sheriff’s office says a Crisp County deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop on a black Honda Accord for improper registration on Georgia 401/I-75 near mile marker 104 North.

“After running the tag, the Deputy determined the vehicle’s registration and listed driver’s license was suspended, there was no insurance, and the listed driver was also wanted,” the release said.

The sheriff’s office says the driver sped up as the deputy approached, traveling in excess of 130 miles per hour and operating the vehicle recklessly, ultimately striking another vehicle and losing control in Dooly County.

The vehicle flipped multiple times and stopped against a guardrail. Four people inside, including two juveniles and the woman who was driving, were taken to Crisp Regional Hospital.

Deputies identified the driver as 35-year-old Whitney Jones of Camilla. She was taken to the Crisp County Detention Center after being released from the hospital.

Deputies say Jones has two active warrants for felony probation violation: one from the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say Jones’ criminal history includes five felony convictions.

She now faces the following charges:

  • Two counts cruelty to children – 2nd degree
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude
  • Speeding in excess of maximum limits
  • Two counts of child youth restraint not used properly
  • Multiple other traffic violations

The two juveniles were released from the hospital as well, but the other passenger remains hospitalized.
