Macon-Bibb commissioners approve replacing old street lights with brighter LED lighting
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb will be brighter, safer and more beautiful when the sun goes down and the street lights turn on in the evening.
Commissioners have voted in favor of updating a large number of street lights all around the area.
County spokesperson Chris Floore tells 41NBC News that Philips Lighting will be doing the work. He also said a purchase order will be issued, it will take some time to order material, then it will take about 6 to 9 months to install the new LED street lights replacing some old street lights.
During the day Macon-Bibb is stunningly beautiful, but many people say at night things change.
Christian Curry, a Macon-Bibb resident said, “You never know who might try to rob you or whatever. I think the city needs to invest in getting more lights around Macon.”
In order to brighten things up at night, Georgia Power replaced around 6,000 old street lights with new LED street lights. The reviews are in.
Avery Strickland, said he’s seen the new LED street lights at night, “They are phenomenal. It is like night and day. It is almost like having 100 new bulbs in one lamp.”
Now, Macon-Bibb commissioners will spend just over $1.5 million to replace around 1,600 street lights with LED streets lights.
Andrew Sowerbrower said, “Anything on the left side of Tattnall Square Park is a pretty dark area so people avoid it. But I think if we can lighten it up it would be pretty.”
LED street lights illuminate a bigger area and save money.
