WR Takes First Step Towards Mass Transit

Warner Robins City Council members were all in favor of applying for grants that would fund an in-depth study on the needs to Middle Georgia commuters.

The leaders have taken the first steps towards trying to obtain a mass transit system in the area.

Mayor Chuck Shaheen says he’s never known the city of Warner Robins to have public transportation, but knows it’s needed.

“It would be great to provide services to people that are disabled, that can’t get around financially to provide them ways to get to the hospital, to get to shopping and be able to function throughout their everyday needs.”

For 88-year-old Helen Stephens of Bonaire, a transit system that could provide door-to-door service would be wonderful in her opinion.

“I’m an independent person, I hate to have to ask people to do things for me.”

Stephens was diagnosed with macular degeneration, making her legally blind. She hasn’t driven since 2008 and fully supports mass transit.

Warner Robins Transportation Planner Jessica Bird says if the funds are awarded, the study will help determine the best type of transit system for the community.

The study will review all of Houston County, which includes Warner Robins, Centerville, Perry and part of Peach County where Byron is located.
