(CNN)- Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating a fatal police shooting in Madison that has prompted protests and renewed calls for transparency.

Community members gathered Thursday for a vigil honoring Corey Ruiz, who was shot and killed by police Wednesday at the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin streets.

According to Madison police, four officers responded to the scene, where Ruiz allegedly injured one officer with a knife during a struggle before officers opened fire.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case, which is being investigated as an active homicide inquiry. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the local district attorney’s office to determine whether any charges are warranted.

As demonstrators rallied in downtown Madison, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and city leaders called for a transparent review of the incident.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said no one should lose their life during an encounter with law enforcement, regardless of their background or past.

All four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson acknowledged the strain the incident has placed on the community, saying the use of force can erode public trust and emphasizing the importance of a thorough, independent review.
