Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 10 others were injured after a truck drove through a children's soccer game Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.
(CNN)- Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 10 others were injured after a truck drove through a children’s soccer game Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.
Police say the driver, a 34-year-old mother, has been released from custody while the investigation continues.
Authorities have not filed charges against the woman.
According to investigators, two of the woman’s children were inside the truck at the time of the crash, while another child was playing on a different soccer field.
The crash killed a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. Five other children and five adults were injured.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as players, coaches and spectators scrambled to escape the approaching vehicle.
“I hear to my left, you know, people screaming, and I hear the bumping from the car,” said Bryant Garza, a 15-year-old referee.
“And I turn over, see all these people running, panicking, the car driving over a bunch of people with chairs.”
Tommy Huynh, a coach for an opposing soccer team, said the tragedy was difficult to comprehend.
“It’s almost hard to imagine something like that ever happening here,” Huynh said.
A young player identified as Isaac said his father rushed toward the truck and attempted to remove the driver.
“If he didn’t do that, maybe the car wouldn’t have stopped and more people could’ve gotten hit,” Isaac said.
Other witnesses described community members rushing to help the injured.
One worker who witnessed the crash said the sounds of the incident would remain with them for the rest of their life.
“It’s a sound that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life,” the witness said.
Police have not announced what caused the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
