What’s Right With Our Schools: Leading Ladies

Sonny Carter’s Academic Coordinator, Amanda Marsh, attended
“We wanted to give girls examples of what leadership looks like in different phases of their lives,” says Marsh.
Over breakfast, the girls shared their personal experiences, and listened to speeches from high school, college and adult women.
Each gave a piece of advice.
“They have an image in their mind of someone they want to be like when they grow up of a woman leader who is making a difference in our community,” adds Marsh.

The goal is to help these girls with any questions they have about becoming the leader they want to be, ultimately giving them guidance on their own journey, and bringing up meaningful conversations.
“How can I be a leader when I grow up to be a woman, and what will that look like,” says Marsh.
And keeping their minds focused on the future.
“And so we want them to walk away saying, I may not go to Wesleyan, but college is cool and I’m going to get there.”
Marsh adds it is important each girl realizes she can be a leader, because she already is one.
Sonny Carter hopes to continue this program next year.
