What’s Right With Our Schools: Future Farmers of America
The agriculture program and Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization, recently started by teacher and FFA Advisor Tripp Tolleson, helps kids learn in a new way.
“Any kid can get anything out of this, because we’re such diversified program, and ag [agriculture] is such a diversified concept,” Tolleson says, “…from plant science to leadership skills.”
Students tend to the school garden and get hands-on with livestock.
“Our kids here are in such an urban environment. They don’t have this opportunity at home,” says Tolleson.
Assistant Principal Cameron Andrews believes having an on-campus program to this degree helps students explore a different world.
“I see future veterinarians…kids that are coming out that may even go to medical school,” says Andrews.
Not only will the class and organization help kids realize future career paths, kids are beginning to value the “farm to table” concept by understanding where their food comes from. Also, by participating in livestock competitions and raising the animals at the school, kids feel connected to the community.
“It’s given me a lot of leadership and responsibility,” says student Caleb Andrews.
