Westfield looks to upset FPD Homecoming in our Game of the Week

The Westfield School Hornets (3-1) prepare to face the FPD Vikings (4-1) for the first time in 15 years in our Game of the Week matchup for Week six of the high school football season
Game Of The Week Preview 6: Westfield Hornets

PERRY, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Westfield School, and second year Head Coach Chad Campbell, are leading the 3-1 Hornets squad into battle against the reigning GIAA AAAA State Champions, the 4-1 FPD Vikings.

Coming off back to back 5-6 seasons, this Westfield squad is much improved behind Coach Campbell’s schematics. This Hornets team has scored an average of 38 points a game, while only allowing more than 14 points in just one game this season, which came in their only loss of the season so far to Deerfield-Windsor 33-29. In fact, Coach Campbell had such a incredible tenure as head coach of the Peach County Trojans dating back to 2007, that the 2023 season was his first losing season ever.

However, after a 21-14 victory in Week Five to beat a tough undefeated Tiftarea Academy team, these Hornets are now more than confident heading into Friday night’s game. On paper these two teams seem like rivals. That’s because they have faced off in 29 regular season matchups, eight playoff games, and are tied at a 19-19 record all-time dating back to 1977.  Although, these two squads haven’t met on the gridiron since 2009.

Coach Campbell is proud of how far his team has come since he arrived in Perry.  “I feel good. Our coaching staff stayed in tact. Kids are more familiar with us, we’re more familiar with them in year two. They’re a lot more coqnizant of what we’re doing in all three phases – offensively, defensively, and special teams-wise” said Coach Campbell at Tuesday’s practice.

“Last year, we had a small group of seniors and they did a great job of leading this football team. This year, we got a lot of experienced seniors and they know what is expected out of them this year, and so far, they’ve done a really good job. So far, the start of the season has been really good. We’ve felt like we played good football and we feel like we haven’t reached our full potential yet, and that’s good.  We just hope to build each and every week.”

Hornets Senior DB/WR Michael Easom told me it’s going to be a tough game on the road, but he is prepared to play the villain on Friday night. “Good preparation is going to win this one.  They are a good football team. It’s their homecoming, so we want to make them have a bad homecoming” said Easom.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium.
