Westfield Hornets will see different schedule in 2014

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Ronnie Jones has been coaching the Westfield Hornets for 22 years.  In 2013, he led the school to its first ever state football championship.  With 2014 right around the corner, Jones hopes his team can continue from last year’s success.

Jones says he learned a lot about his team during the championship run, but he also learned a lot about where the team needs to improve. He says his squad can get better defensively across the board, while also talking about how the overall team speed took a hit after a few key departures.

However, the 2014 Hornets will be returning a fair number of starters from 2013, including quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who Jones says is continually improving and growing more comfortable with his team’s offensive playbook, as well as gaining strength and confidence.

The majority of the line of scrimmage will be back, with offensive tackle Khorey Holliday being moved inside to guard to satisfy a team need. The entire secondary will also be returning. Defensive tackles John Walker Moore and Walker Davison will be two of several the Hornets will be leaning on for the upcoming season.

This will be the first time in two decades Westfield will not be competing against Macon-based schools, but they will have their hands full just the same with opponents like Valwood, Deerfield, and John Milledge on the schedule.

Westfield gets set to defend their title on August 22 against Southland.
