Website Offers Personal Info. for Free…Is it a Scam?

Have you ever heard of the website Spokeo.com? It is a site which gives your personal information, shows a picture of your house, and tells others how much money you make, for free.

It may sound like a scam, but the site isn’t breaking any laws.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Spokeo.com is simply taking information already public, and putting it into one place.

But it has people like Erin Simko worried that the wrong type of person can find information too easily.

“You have sex offenders and now they’re mad and they get out of prison and they want to go back and get somebody, all they have to do is go and push a button,” Simko says.

The B.B.B. says information like this is public, therefore the website is not breaking any laws by posting it online.

The B.B.B. says a website like Spokeo should not be a concern for identity theft, because information like your social security number is not available for anyone to see. But they do warn people to be careful of information you post online, because once it is out there, it is available for almost anyone to see.
