MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Friday Weaver Middle School hosted Midsouth Community Federal Credit Union for a “money moves” workshop, that teaches seventh- and eighth-grade students’ financial stability.

The Bibb County School District is in partnership with the Midsouth Community Federal Credit Union, and director of gear up Jarred Moore, says the “money moves” workshop is just one event they host to teach students the importance of financial stability.

“It is vitally important! Our third project objective centers around increasing student and family knowledge. I believe the students don’t know what they don’t know. So, the more opportunities we present for them to learn and become well informed, there able to have bright futures”, said Moore.

Midsouth training and development director Kelsey Mahone says, this foundation introduces students to terms associated with understanding money such as wants, needs and saving money.

“As well as understanding checking accounts and saving accounts. What they do for you, how to open one, and just a little snippet of what credit is like. How you should look at credit, and mostly decision-making is what we talk about in the beginning”, said Mahone.

Mahone says Midsouth’s main goal is to prepare students to make informed life and career decisions after graduation.

Once they get into college, you’re not enticed by the things we had to be enticed by, and I think more importantly its decision making. Also, midsouth we want to be their partner, when they start their journey of opening accounts and taking out credits, we want to be there to support and have their backs in how they make decisions”, said Mahone.

Principal at Weaver Middle School Dr. Dominique Nichols believes this workshop is needed because many young adult’s parish due to a lack of knowledge.

“So, the knowledge and insight, even if they don’t have a complete and perfect understanding of it now, planting that seed that there’s something to know, something to pay attention to too. And of course, supplementing whatever their parents are teaching them about literacy; I think it will help them have a more solid future, and wiser management of their money”, said Nichols.

This workshop takes place each year for seventh- and eighth-grade students.
