We Take You to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center

The whole state benefits from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center based in Forsyth.

“We blow things up, we shoot things, we wreck cars, we do all that neat stuff,” said Terry Duffey, GPSTC Division Director.

Nearly 1,000 acres of training props and an operational prison are nestled inside the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, just off Interstate-75.

“It is the only state facility in Georgia that has this type of capability,” explained Duffey.

On average, 700 to 1,000 students come to the GPSTC for training each week, from basic or mandate training which is required by law, to advanced and specialized training.

“Adult learners learn primarily in one fashion and that’s by doing,” said Lt. Jason Kellett, Dalton Regional Academy.

In the midst of the facility you’ll find the corner of Hazardous St. and Dangerous St. in the middle of a mock town where officers are put in various scenarios and they’re trained to react. The officers are in the classroom for 10 weeks before putting their knowledge to use.

“They’re made up of classes from Sherriff’s Departments, Police Departments all across Georgia, state agencies,” explained Todd Brannan, Firearms Instructor.

If you’ve had an encounter with law enforcement, chances are they’ve paid a visit to Forsyth.

“I think it very well may save an officers life one day,” said Mike Jones, Gordon Co. Sheriff’s Office.

The GPSTC considers itself huge partners with the city of Forsyth. From the students who come in and spend money in town on food and hotels to major community events held at the facility, like the Forsythia Festival Fashion Show and the Taste of Monroe.
