Wayne Johnson, Chuck Hand competing in Republican primary runoff for U.S. House Georgia District 2
With runoff elections underway, the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. House Georgia District 2 has been gaining national attention.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With runoff elections underway, the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. House Georgia District 2 has been gaining national attention.
The two Republican candidates, Wayne Johnson and Chuck Hand, are vying for the opportunity to represent their district in the upcoming November election.
Wayne Johnson, a military veteran and lifelong Georgia resident, recently shared his views on some of the key issues facing the district.
“I think we have two challenges,” he said. “One is safety and security of our communities. We need more deputies. We need more law enforcement. The second thing is affordable housing. As I’ve traveled through the district, I’ve learned that there are jobs, there’s just not housing for people to have jobs. And this housing needs to be such that you can actually get into it and live comfortably for less than $1,000 a month.”
Johnson says he has an answer to help with the housing issues.
“I’m actually taking personal initiative,” he said. “I made a capital investment down in Plains, Georgia, with a manufacturing operation to build what are known as tiny homes, but these aren’t so tiny. We’re calling it a presidential power cottage. They’re two bedroom, two baths. They will be in a cluster community environment. So, I’m doing that as a demonstration. And then I’m also going to be deploying similar communities throughout different parts of Georgia.”
Johnson says the biggest problem is corporations “buying up houses.”
“We don’t have a natural market with regard to that,” he said. “So we’ve got to look at just basically what kind of risks are being created because houses are not held in individuals’ names, but they’re actually held in large corporation names.”
He says if elected, progress will be better for all Americans saying.
“Progress will look like,’ Hey, my life is different, my paychecks are going further. The cost of groceries and gas has gone down, and I got a place I can live and be safe at.'”
Candidate Chuck Hand was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
The Republican candidate who prevails in the runoff election will move on to challenge the Democratic incumbent, Rep. Sanford Bishop, in the November election. Early voting is underway and will conclude on Friday.
Runoff election day is Tuesday, June 18.
