Warner Robins Police Chief Wayne Fisher, says he was in a position to make a difference to help improve the city.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Warner Robins police department held the groundbreaking ceremony for its new training center.

Warner Robins Police Chief Wayne Fisher, says he was in a position to make a difference to help improve the city.

“We wanted to develop a training center that would allow us to provide not only for our needs, but also with in our local region. So, it will allow for a better learning environment to take place, than currently what we’ve had. It will allow for increase technology to be present. We have a part that’s going to be built out for defensive training. So officers will have expanded skill sets presented for them as well”, said Fisher.

He says the new facility not only helps the department, but residents as well.

“We do utilize these grounds for training civilians. We do women’s defensive classes, firearm classes, also make ourselves open to other community organizations. We’ve done things with scouting programs in the past, allowing this to be a venue point to facility some of their request points”, said Chief Fisher.

According to Lieutenant Kirk Lowry, a new place to train was much needed.

“The ceilings here were only eight feet, we would hit lights and ceiling fans. the new building will have an area for defensive tactic training, with a high ceiling. I can put about twenty people in here, now we will be able to put a lot more”, said Lowry.

Lieutenant Lowry says the new training facility is going to make a big difference within the department and the community.

“We’ve got brand new employees coming into the city, the rest of the city is new its modern. Now, look at this, this is the first thing that the employees will see. This is the first thing that a civilian will see when they come to take a firearms training class. And we don’t want this to represent the Warner Robins Police Department. So, the Chief and city council were willing to give us the money to get this project going, I’m so thankful for that”

Chief Fisher also says the plan is to have the facility operating by August or September of this year, depending on weather conditions.
