Warner Robins Motorists Brave Roadways in Below Freezing Temps
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Despite icy conditions, some people in Warner Robins weren’t afraid to hit the roads Wednesday morning.
41NBC’s Tucker Sargent spoke with a few of them outside Wal-mart on Watson Boulevard and has the story.
Around 8:30 Tuesday night, rain finally made the transition over to snow. Temperatures fell into the high teens overnight, leaving a nasty slush on Watson Boulevard Wednesday morning, but a few brave souls decided to get out on it anyway.
Tesla Riggins is celebrating her 22nd birthday Wednesday.
“I feel like I can’t do anything,” Riggins says. “Nobody wants to do anything with me because it’s snowy and it’s iced out.”
But you went to Wal-mart?
“Yeah, I’ve got to go to Wal-mart,” Riggins says with a laugh. “I didn’t have no choice but to get in the streets.”
The story was the same for 15-year-old Warner Robins high school sophomore Tyler Dorsey, who was there shopping for groceries with his dad after supplies got low.
“We’re basically here to get groceries, to get something in the house,” Dorsey says.
At about noon Wednesday, the parking lot at the store was about halfway full–definitely way fewer cars than you’d normally see at a Wal-mart that time of day.
Not everyone was there because they ran out of something in the pantry.
Kenny Pierce owns KP Painting in Warner Robins. He didn’t go to work Wednesday, but he came to Wal-mart because he was tired of being cooped up in the house.
For others looking to brave the icy roadways, Mr. Pierce has some good advice.
“Everybody be safe,” Pierce says. “I know everybody’s not used to it, but be careful and look for other people–not just yourself.”
No major accidents were reported in Houston County.
Chief Jimmy Williams with Houston County EMA tells us most traffic problems were in subdivisions on less traveled roads where there are lots of trees and hills to navigate.
Wednesday night, roads are expected to freeze over again, so use caution if you absolutely have to be out and about.
