Warner Robins car show donates thousands to veterans

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cars, trucks and motorcycles from every decade took over the museum of aviation parking lot Saturday–but this show wasn’t just for pleasure.

“It’s a big honor to me,” said war veteran Buddy Batchelor.

“It’s really good to see all that support,” said war veteran Joe Letterman.

Shiny wheels, bright headlights and some loud engines came together Saturday.

The Museum of Aviation hosted the Americans Helping Wounded Veterans Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show.

It’s not just about restored cars–the money they’re raising is going to help veterans have a better life.

“It’s unbelievable the feeling that you get when you’re able to give some to these guys that really deserve it–it’s a lot of fun,” said Rutherford.

Joe Rutherford and Warren Martin, Vietnam vets themselves, helped put it together.

“That’s what we’re here about–is for our veterans,” said Martin.

Letterman and Batchelor couldn’t say thanks enough.

“When I first come home, you never heard of stuff like this,” said Batchelor. “We didn’t have this stuff. But now, the new veterans are getting it and some of the older Vietnam veterans still around, we’re getting it now, and it feels good.”

Portions of the money raised from entrance fees are heading Batchelor’s way.

Letterman’s receiving a unique way to get around.

“They’re actually going to give me a track wheelchair because it’ll help me get around in the woods and stuff,” said Letterman. “I like to hunt and fish. And sometimes I can wear my legs and sometimes with my back and hip injuries it makes it really hard. So, it’s just another tool in my toolbox to go out and do things.”

Anything to help men who sacrificed so much.

“Glad that the country is embracing our veterans and giving them the respect and honor they deserve,” said Martin.

Organizers expect to raise nearly $5,000.

They’ll divide it between Batchelor and one other veteran.

Batchelor says he’ll be getting a badly needed new kitchen floor with the money.
