Walgreens announces store closures, including Macon location on Mercer University Drive
Walgreens plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years, impacting Macon, Georgia location at 4305 Mercer University Drive.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Signs posted outside of the Walgreens store at 4305 Mercer University Drive in Macon alerted customers that it will close permanently at Noon on May 21.
It’s the third Walgreens to close in Macon over the last few years. The other two were at 2495 Pio Nono Avenue, which closed in 2020 and on 1280 Gray Highway, which closed in 2023. A Walgreens in Warner Robins at 1880 Watson Boulevard closed earlier this year.
For residents in the Macon, alternative Walgreens locations include: 3888 Vineville Avenue and 6035 Zebulon Road.
Late last year, Walgreens Boots Alliance announced a strategic plan to close approximately 1,200 stores over the next three years, which includes its location at 4305 Mercer University Drive in Macon. This decision is part of the company’s “footprint optimization program,” which aims to improve financial performance through cost savings and increased free cash flow, according to a news release.
The company expects to close about 500 stores in fiscal 2025, with more closures in the following years. According to the company, this move is anticipated to have an immediate positive impact on adjusted earnings and the company’s overall cash flow.
