Vice president JD Vance visits Hungary ahead of high-stakes election
Vice president JD Vance is in Hungary, showing support for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just days before a pivotal national election.

(CNN)- The upcoming vote is being described as the most consequential in Hungary since the fall of communism, with Orbán facing his toughest challenge after 16 years in power. JD Vance’s visit has drawn criticism from Orbán’s opponent, Peter Magyar, who called it a form of election interference.
During a joint appearance with Orbán, Vance pushed back on those claims, arguing that political interference has historically come from the European Union.
Vance later delivered a combative speech at a stadium rally and even took a call with Donald Trump, who voiced his support for Orbán. The vice president emphasized what he described as strong ties between the U.S. and Hungary, pointing to shared values and cooperation.
The election is also being closely watched internationally, with ongoing concerns about possible foreign influence — including allegations involving Russia, which Vance denied, instead placing blame on European and Ukrainian actors.
