Veteran Event Offers Information For Services

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – More than 5-hundred people roamed from booth to booth inside and outside the VFW Post on Key Street in Macon for the second annual Central Georgia Home Front Stand Down event…

It’s set up for veterans who need help with things like finding a home or a job, and getting back to school.

State Representative James Beverly spear headed the event, which had more than 50 vendors providing information. He said a lot of vets here don’t even know these services are available… That’s why he brought them together.

” I said if we can get people out to actually help veterans where they are then we can help them move back into society in a way that’s dignified,” said Beverly. “So if there are things that they are dealing with in the shadows they can come to light and that we just do what’s right by our veterans who are willing to do what’s right by us.”

Dr. Nicole Jackson was one of those vendors. She provided free dental work.

“As a veteran myself I realize the importance of having a second step once getting out of the military, and I feel that there is such a large population of veterans out there who really have no access to care,” Jackson said.

The veterans and vendors dined on complimentary hotdogs and burgers while sharing war stories. The vets also got free hair cuts in honor of their service. Hugh Morris was one of veterans, who received a free haircut during the event.

“They have great haircuts and food and benefits for us if you don’t seek them you won’t find them you need to hook up with the VA and stay with it and follow through.”

Veterans in the Milledgeville area can now go to the recently opened U.S. Department of Veterns Affairs office in the city, located at 2249 Carl Vinson Hwy., in Milledgeville.
