UPDATE: Woman’s Body Found Near Telfair County Bridge
JACKSONVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Telfair County deputies and the GBI are investigating a homicide after a body was found in the Ocmulgee River near a bridge outside of Jacksonville Thursday morning.
Two fishermen found the body of a white female near the boat landing around 11:30.
“We came down and there was in fact a body there,” said Telfair County Sheriff, Chris Steverson. “We recovered the body, which turned out to be a white female, approximately 64 years of age. She’s unidentified at the moment.”
Steverson says the victim was recovered from the water wearing black capri style pants and a light colored designer shirt decorated with wine bottles and small rhinestones. He says it looked like the body had been in the water for at least a few days.
Investigators sent the body to the State Crime Lab in Atlanta for identification and an autopsy. When asked what led them to treat the case as a homicide, Steverson declined to say why just yet.
He did say he doesn’t think the community should be worried.
“We see no indication that would lead us to believe there is someone out there in the community looking to commit these type of crimes.”
Surrounding sheriff’s offices, along with the GBI, are all assisting with the investigation.
