UPDATE: Second person dies after Thursday morning crash on Mercer University Drive

The crash happened at 5:09 a.m. on March 20, when a Dodge Durango and a Hyundai Elantra collided head-on east of Edwards Avenue.

UPDATE (5:45 p.m.): A second person has died after a crash Thursday morning on Mercer University Drive.

According to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release, just after 3 p.m., deputies responded to a home in the 1800 block of Wray Place after a call for assistance in reference to a person down.

When deputies arrived, they found a 51-year-old man unresponsive inside the home. Coroner Leon Jones pronounced him dead on scene. The sheriff’s office identified him as John Michael Cox and said he was the same 51-year-old man involved in Thursday morning’s crash.

“According to Medical Staff, after being transported to Atrium Health Navicent this morning, the male left against medical advice. According to Coroner Leon Jones, the deceased will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab so that an autopsy can be performed,” the release stated.

The 29-year-old woman and 9-year-old boy have been released from the hospital.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man died in a traffic collision Thursday morning on Mercer University Drive near Grosso Avenue, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened at 5:09 a.m. on March 20, when a Dodge Durango and a Hyundai Elantra collided head-on east of Edwards Avenue.

The Dodge Durango was driven by a 51-year-old man. The Hyundai Elantra was driven by a 37-year-old man, with a 29-year-old woman and a 9-year-old boy as passengers.

All three were transported to Atrium Navicent Health for treatment. The 37-year-old male driver of the Hyundai Elantra was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver has been identified as Javaughn Raheen Hackney. According to Chief Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley, the next of kin has been notified

The other individuals involved are in critical but stable condition.
