UPDATE: Roads cleared after truck with radioactive medical supplies crashes in Monroe County

GEMA and the EPD reported that it is non-hazardous to anyone in the area.

(UPDATED 12/16 at 6:21 p.m.) The scene of the wreck has been cleaned and the radioactive waste has been removed, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Per the EPD there is no threat posed to the public. All lanes are open.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A truck carrying radioactive medical supplies crashed in Monroe County Monday morning , according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to an accident on Highway 74 at 6:49 a.m. on December 16.

Upon arrival, deputies were notified that the vehicle was carrying medical supplies that were being delivered to a Macon hospital. The supplies were identified as Technetium 99M, which is a  radioactive isotope that is used in medical imaging. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Technetium 99M has a 60 half-life before radiation is eliminated.

GEMA and the EPD reported that it is non-hazardous to anyone in the area. A radiation clean-up crew has been dispatched to the scene. Road barricades have been set up and one lane on Highway 74 will be shut down until further notice and clean up has been completed.
