UPDATE: No voting on Sunday in Bibb County
In the end, those in favor of not allowing voters to cast ballots on Sunday, won.
“I felt like we really did have plenty of opportunities to vote,” said Macon-Bibb Election Board member, Rinda Wilson.”I mean we’ve gone from having one day to having three weeks of early voting, Saturday voting, and absentee voting.”
Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections members at times yelled out their concerns to one another during a meeting held Thursday at the elections office.
“I think it was unfortunate,” said Ronnie Miley who wrote the Sunday Voting resolution with board member, Steve (xxx). “I think that a lot of things that was discussed and talked about had nothing to do with Sunday voting.”
After a heated debate board members voted three to two not to hold Sunday voting.
Macon-Bibb County Commissioners approved $3,000 for residents to have an extra day for voting.
“I was pleased to vote the other day in favor of appropriating the small, small amount of money that it would have taken to add that additional day of voting,” said Macon-Bibb County Commissioner of District 3, Elaine Lucas.
Those in favor of Sunday voting, like Macon Democratic Party , Chair, Cassandra Powell said they were disappointed the issue was voted down.
“I was hoping that we we could follow suit and do the same thing and have Sunday voting,” said Powell. “It ain’t no skin off your back why not?”
Miley said he will continue to fight for Sunday voting in Bibb County.
“I just think that, you know one of my duties is to try to provide as much opportunity for people to vote as possible,” he said.
