UPDATE: Monroe County Sheriff’s Office helping with body found in Ocmulgee River investigation

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is helping identify the man found dead in the Ocmulgee River this weekend.

Bibb Coroner Leon Jones says the man was wearing a black and gold “Mary Persons Prom 2015” rubber bracelet. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says there are no tattoos or other identifying marks on the body. A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office adds no one has been reported missing that matches the description of the man.

Officials couldn’t identify the body from fingerprints because of its severe decomposition. The autopsy started today, but Jones says officials will need to keep running tests.

Kayakers found the man around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Jones says this is the fifth person found dead in the river over the past few years.

A body was found in the Ocmulgee River Saturday.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones tells 41 NBC the unidentified man’s body was badly decomposed.

Jones says the nude body, which is around five feet and 11 inches tall, has been in the river for more than several days.

A group of kayakers found the body around 9 a.m., nearly 300 feet east of the Second Street bridge, according to Jones.

Bibb County Sheriff’s crime lab was unable to get fingerprints because of the skin decomposition, Jones added.

Macon-Bibb Fire Department Water Rescue crew pulled the body out of the water around 10 a.m.

Jones added the body will be taken to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for next week to determine the cause of death and identification.

Jones explained he is working to get a court order to cremate the body immediately following the autopsy.
