UPDATE: Macon Man Killed by West Virginia State Police

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon man was shot and killed by police officers in West Virginia Monday afternoon, after officials say he pulled out a gun during a traffic stop.

The NBC affiliate in Beckley West Virginia, WVVA, is reporting that around 4:30 yesterday, 44-year-old Jimmy L. Hamlin was gunned down by officers when he got out of his car with a rifle in hand.

West Virginia State Police Sergeant Michael Baylous told 41NBC, police had been searching for Hamlin in reference to a domestic dispute call. Hamlin was also reported to have been intoxicated and armed.

Baylous says when two Lewisburg Police officers spotted his vehicle along U.S. 219, they stopped Hamlin who was armed with a rifle.

The officers called for backup, and Hamlin got out of the car with his gun in hand. When he refused to put it down, and started moving the weapon around in a threatening manner, officers on the scene opened fire. Officers shot Hamlin multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Baylous says the incident is under investigation.

“Two of our officers and two of the other officers on the scene have been placed on paid administrative leave which is normal in a critical incident like this it gives them time to deal with their emotions and uh try to decompress somewhat,” Baylous said.

Baylous told us Hamlin’s license says he lived in Kathleen, Georgia.

According to an incident report 41 NBC obtained from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Hamlin lived in Macon.

The report states that on November 12, 2012, Hamlin posted on Facebook and texted suicidal messages to a woman who lives in Kathleen. The report states that Hamlin was found and taken into custody by Pulaski County deputies.
