United Way of Central Georgia announces new initiative to improve literacy

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The United Way of Central Georgia is starting a new program to address local literacy problems.

“Read United” focuses on the importance of having volunteers tutor students to help them improve reading proficiency. Superintendent of Bibb County Schools, Dr. Curtis Jones believes the initiative will strengthen the community and increase graduation rates.

“Students who are most at risk are those who cannot read so this is an effort to bring it together; financial resources, human resources, as well as school resources to tackle the problem that we have in the community,” Jones adds.

Organizers say the success of the initiative depends on volunteers.

Anyone who is interested in tutoring students in reading once a week, should contact Ariel Malcolm at amalcolm@unitedwaycg.com, or call 478-745-4732, ext. 205.
