United In Pink Campaign Helps the Children of Breast Cancer Survivors Cope

Gathered in the classrooms at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, children between the ages of four and 16 gather together to strengthen one another and ask questions.

All of the kids are children or grandchildren of breast cancer survivors. While breast cancer can be a scary topic to discuss or deal with, it’s just as important for kids to understand what all comes with it. But there are ways to make learning about it and dealing with it, fun.

For instance, the kids’ day is full of activities. They have arts and crafts, time on the playground, and dance lessons.

The camp is a way for the entire family to cope with mom or grandma having breast cancer.

Eight year-old Zion Jackson is here, because his mother is a four time survivor. He is now old enough to begin to understand and talk about what it means for his mother to have gone through surviving so much.

“I go everywhere she goes…to protect her,” Jackson says. “I know if you have breast cancer, sometimes you lose your hair, and it’ll take a while for it to grow back.”
