UGA Extension launches diabetes program in Forsyth
“We’ve run across a lot of people that, you know, obviously have a day-to-day battle with it."

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Many individuals and families are affected by diabetes, whether personally or through someone they know.
In an effort to provide support and resources, Living Word Community Church in Forsyth is opening its doors to the University of Georgia (UGA) Extension to launch a four-month diabetes program aimed at helping the community.
The UGA Extension Diabetes Program consists of eight sessions held every other week, providing education and support for those living with type one and type two diabetes.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, more than two million Georgians are living with prediabetes, and nearly one million individuals have been diagnosed with diabetes. That’s why Catherine Rogers, Business Administrator for Living Word Community Church in Forsyth, wants to make a difference within the community.
“We’ve run across a lot of people that obviously have a day-to-day battle with it,” Rogers said. “I know that there are several in our area, and in our congregation that had an interest in it.”
Amanda Harner, Family Consumer Sciences Agent with UGA Extension, will lead the course.
“It is really helpful to have support,” she said. “And so if you are someone who is living with diabetes and whether you have management kind of under control, and you’re looking for some extra support just in a community that understands or if you’re really struggling with management, this might be a really great program.”
Topics covered in the program include nutrition, the importance of physical activity and strategies to manage diabetes effectively and prevent complications.
Rogers believes it’s essential for churches and organizations to come together to support those in need.
“It’s our job as churches and other businesses and organizations to come alongside our folks personally and in the community to help them learn how to do that and get them the help that they need,” she said.
The program is open to anyone living in or around Monroe County, with online classes available as well. Sessions are scheduled to run every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Living Word Community Church in Forsyth.
