Tyson Foods’ $59 million expansion will create more than a hundred jobs in Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Tyson Foods distribution center in Macon, is expanding and with expansion comes more economic growth.

“Their presence here in Macon-Bibb speaks volume and does wonders for the community,” said Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert.

Adding more 102 more jobs is just another wonder Tyson Foods is doing for Macon-Bibb County.

“It’s the place we wanted to grow. We just feel about what we can do here,” said Gary Standridge. “The addition of more folks, we feel like this is the right place to be.”

The Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority announced the expansion of Tyson Foods Distribution Center Tuesday morning. The meat distribution company has been in Macon for years and they are ready to grow by more than 150,000 square feet.

“Starting this summer, we’re going to start a construction project, that’s going to more than double the size of our facility and give us the opportunity to service more of our customers from the Macon mixing center,” said Standrige.

Standridge is expecting to hire about 102 employees.

“We’re going to have material handlers like we have today, we’re going to need more managers, we’re going to need more technical folks,” said Standridge. “We’re bringing in some automation that’s somewhat new to us. We’re going to have to find some people that understand that automation.”

Mayor Reichert, hopes the $59 million expansion will bring people from all over Middle Georgia.

“They’ll pull a workforce from around,” said Mayor Reichert. “So it’s an economic development impact, not just quality jobs, but also the payroll, the impact, the taxes that they will pay, it’s a huge economic impact, as well a social impact.”

An impact that will start in late 2018. Construction on the site will begin by the end of July. Tyson Foods will start accepting job application in spring of next year.
