(NBC)- Police in the United Kingdom have arrested a 32-year-old man following a terrifying stabbing rampage on a train north of London late Saturday night.
Authorities say the attack began shortly after the train left Peterborough, with witnesses describing chaotic scenes as the suspect ran down the aisles stabbing passengers at random.
“The details coming out of this attack are really terrifying,” said NBC’s Molly Hunter. “It happened Saturday night, Halloween weekend — lots of people coming into London for parties.”
Witnesses told police they initially thought it was a Halloween prank until they saw passengers “running, with blood dripping down their faces and blood on seats.”
Investigators credit two people with preventing more casualties: an unnamed rail worker, who tried to stop the attacker, and the train driver, who made an emergency stop at Huntingdon Station. That decision allowed police and emergency crews to arrive just eight minutes after the first 911 call.
Police later arrested two men at the scene. One was released, but the other — identified as Anthony Williams, of Peterborough — remains in custody. Williams faces 10 charges of attempted murder, one count of possessing a blade, and additional attempted murder charges related to a separate incident earlier that same day.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive but say the investigation is ongoing.
