Two killed, three injured in shooting at Rhode Island high school hockey game

A high school hockey game turned deadly Monday night when a gunman opened fire inside an arena, killing two people and injuring three others.

(NBC)- Police in Pawtucket are working to determine what led to a deadly shooting that erupted during a high school hockey game Monday afternoon, killing two people and critically injuring three others.

Video from inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena captured the sound of rapid gunfire echoing across the rink as players were on the ice and families filled the stands.

Authorities say the shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. during a senior night game featuring players from several local high schools.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said there was one lone suspect and described the incident as targeted.

“There was one lone suspect. This was a targeted event. It looks like it was a family dispute,” Goncalves said.

Overnight, police identified the suspect as Robert Dorgan, who they say also went by Roberta Esposito. Investigators say Dorgan died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Multiple firearms were recovered. Police say one person attempted to intervene during the shooting.

The tragedy comes just over two months after a mass shooting at Brown University in nearby Providence that killed two students and injured nine others.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee responded to the latest violence, saying, “Our state is grieving again.”

Community members expressed shock and disbelief. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to piece together the timeline and motive behind the shooting.
