(CNN)- Police in Montgomery, Alabama, are investigating a deadly mass shooting that left two people dead and 14 others injured late Saturday night.

Authorities say rival gunmen opened fire in a crowded nightlife district just before midnight, sending bystanders running for cover. Three of the victims remain in critical condition.

Investigators are interviewing potential suspects and have recovered multiple weapons from the scene. Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert said the department “will not rest until those responsible are behind bars.”

The shooting marks one of the deadliest incidents in the city this year, as officers continue working to determine what sparked the gunfire.
