SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Two people were arrested Wednesday for trading with inmates, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy sheriff was patrolling Cody Johnson Road around 12:50 a.m. March 19 when he noticed a silver Toyota Corolla. The vehicle failed to maintain its lane, prompting a traffic stop. The vehicle had two occupants inside.

When the driver lowered the window, the deputy sheriff smelled marijuana. The deputy called for additional officers. The driver, identified as Kayla Lynn Cruz of Jonesboro, was questioned.

The deputy sheriff also noticed the passenger, Derrick Randell Lumpkin of Social Circle, had a bookbag containing multiple bundles wrapped in gray duct tape. Lumpkin was removed from the vehicle.

Both Cruz and Lumpkin were arrested and taken to the Sparta/Hancock County Detention Center.

Cruz faces charges of failure to maintain lane, possession of items prohibited for inmates, and trading with inmates without the warden’s consent.

Lumpkin is charged with possession of items prohibited for inmates and trading with inmates without consent.

Both individuals may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
