Two Arrested after Dumping Animal Carcasses

Authorities say two people have been
arrested after the carcasses of more than 150 calves were dumped
and left to rot in a Putnam County hayfield.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said the two suspects hauled
pickup loads of the carcasses to the hayfield in recent weeks.

The sheriff said 57-year-old Gerald Baxter and 35-year-old Brent
C. Baxter have been charged with five counts of unlawfully
disposing of dead animals, a misdemeanor. He said they run a
small-time calf operation in Morgan County.

Sills said he was told by one of the suspects that the animals
died after cold weather came through the area.

The sheriff said the Baxters will be required to haul the
carcasses away and bury them.
