Tuition Goes Up For Georgia Colleges and Universities

MACON, Georgia (41 NBC/WMGT) – The University System of Georgia Board of Regents announced on Tuesday that tuition is set to go up for 27 out of 31 colleges and universities in the University System Georgia.

The other four universities will see larger increases than the other universities but the same rate that students have seen last year.

The 2.5% tuition increase shows the ability to “maintain a low percentage increase that the Board uses to minimize the financial impact on students” according to John Brown, Vice Chancellor for Fiscal Affairs in a news release.

41 NBC spoke to a local college official who says the increase is actually a good thing.

Middle Georgia State College Vice President of Enrollment Management Dr. Sheri Rowland explains that the tuition going up shows a sign of the times.

“That’s not unrealistic I think an increase in a year for students because as we look around us you know everything continues to increase at a high rate,” Rowland said. “That increase allows the college then to bring in some extra revenue for the academic year next year.”

At Middle Georgia State College the tuition increase works out to about a $30 increase per semester for students. 

Rowland also said that the rise in tuition could actually benefit MGSC as well, fulfilling more student needs.
