MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  You can see Christmas trees representing different African holiday traditions at the Tubman Museum through January 3.

The Pan African Christmas tree exhibit highlights cultures to come out of the African Diaspora with decorations and historical narratives from countries including America, Jamaica, the Republic of Benin, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria and Liberia.

Education Coordinator for the Tubman, George Crawley, says this is the first year the museum has displayed the exhibit.

“We wanted to have something that in terms of trees, we didn’t want to do a traditional tree celebration,” Crawley said. “We wanted to highlight those cultures and those people who have influenced our lives across the globe.”

The exhibit started at the beginning of December with a tree lighting ceremony featuring a special appearance from King Tovomandjehougni of Benin.

With a total of nine trees, the exhibit also features trees representing Hispanic culture and World AIDS Day.
