Trump presses Republicans to deliver his domestic policy bill by July 4th

(CNN)- President Donald Trump is urging Republicans to fast-track his sweeping domestic policy bill, calling it “the ultimate codification of our agenda” — and pushing for it to be signed by Independence Day.
The bill, which includes major tax cuts, spending reductions, and significant investment in border security, hit a speed bump after the Senate parliamentarian determined that several key provisions do not meet the criteria required under the budget reconciliation process. That process allows legislation to pass the Senate with a simple majority, bypassing the usual 60-vote threshold — but only for measures directly tied to the federal budget.
One rejected provision would change how states fund Medicaid through what’s known as a “provider tax.” Some lawmakers, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), see this as an opportunity to revise the bill to protect rural hospitals.
“This would be a chance for leadership to fix it and actually do something right here that’s not going to hurt rural hospitals,” Hawley said.
Despite the setback, GOP leaders remain hopeful the Senate can revise and pass the bill over the weekend. If approved, it would still need another vote in the House. President Trump insists the legislation will deliver historic wins for his administration. “We’ll deliver a record tax cut, a record spending cut, a record investment in border security,” he said.
Democrats, however, are pushing back hard — criticizing the proposed cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs, which they say would fund tax breaks for the wealthy.
“It is morally bankrupt to ask working and middle Americans to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires at a time they’re struggling to pay for groceries and rent,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
