(CNN)- A public feud is intensifying between Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV, with both trading sharp criticism over global conflicts and moral leadership.
Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane during a multi-city visit across Africa, the Chicago-born pontiff pushed back against recent attacks from the president, making clear he would not be silenced.
“I have no fear of either the Trump administration nor speaking out loudly about the message of the gospel,” Pope Leo said. “That’s what I believe I am called to do, what the Church is called to do.”
The pope emphasized that the Catholic Church’s mission is rooted in faith—not politics—saying its role is to build bridges and promote peace.
“We’re not politicians. We’re not looking to make foreign policy,” he said. “But I do believe in the message of the gospel — ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’”
The comments come after Pope Leo repeatedly criticized U.S. actions involving Iran, drawing a strong response from Trump.
Speaking Sunday night, the president lashed out at the pontiff, accusing him of taking positions he disagrees with on global security and domestic issues.
“We don’t like it,” Trump said. “We don’t like a Pope that’s going to say that it’s OK to have a nuclear weapon… I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo.”
In posts on Truth Social, Trump escalated his criticism, calling the pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” He also said he preferred the pope’s brother, Louis Prevost, citing his support for the MAGA movement.
The president further stirred controversy by sharing an AI-generated image depicting himself as a Christ-like figure healing a sick person, surrounded by American imagery. The post was later deleted.
Trump defended the image, saying it was meant to portray him as a doctor or Red Cross-style figure helping people, and blamed “fake news” for misinterpreting it.
He also suggested Pope Leo’s election was influenced by his American background, claiming the Church chose him to better “deal with” his presidency.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo has continued to condemn the use of religious language to justify military action, particularly regarding Iran.
A Vatican official, Father Antonio Spadaro, said the president is attempting to challenge a moral authority he cannot control.
