(NBC)- President Donald Trump is facing renewed pressure to reach a resolution in the war with Iran, while insisting the United States has achieved some of its goals.

“We no longer have to worry about nuclear weapons with Iran because they’re wiped out,” Trump told reporters overnight.

The comments came after Trump rejected an Iranian ceasefire proposal that would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Iran’s nuclear program was part of the reason Trump rejected the proposal, saying the administration was not confident Iranian officials were negotiating in good faith.

“They were asking for everything up front with a promise that they would then talk,” Waltz said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi defended the proposal during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and said Iran remains prepared for either diplomacy or continued conflict.

“We are ready for diplomacy. We are ready for war at the same time,” Araghchi said.

The developments come amid new NBC News reporting that eight U.S. Marines were injured in an Iranian strike on their ship in the Strait of Hormuz two weeks ago, according to three U.S. officials.

The officials said the injuries included concussion symptoms and all eight Marines have since returned to duty. U.S. Central Command declined to comment.

Iranian state media also reported Iranian forces confronted multiple ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without permission over the weekend.

Trump has maintained that the United States has control over the strait through a naval blockade as disruptions to the critical shipping route continue to affect the global economy.
