Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement in Georgia, record ICE arrests nationwide
Federal agencies target undocumented immigrants, sparking controversy and diplomacy with Colombia

(CNN)- The Trump administration has ramped up its efforts to address illegal immigration, with federal agencies collaborating to target undocumented immigrants across the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported nearly 1,000 arrests and more than 500 detainers in just one day. These operations spanned several communities nationwide, including in Atlanta, Puerto Rico, Colorado, Los Angeles, Austin, and Chicago.
ICE agents now operate under a quota of 75 arrests per day, and other federal agencies have been enlisted to aid in locating undocumented individuals. The “border czar” described the coordinated effort as a “game changer,” particularly in targeting violent criminals during high-profile actions like the recent blitz in Chicago.
While supporters of the crackdown emphasize its focus on upholding the law, critics, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, argue that the raids have targeted individuals whose only offense is entering the U.S. illegally. Pritzker highlighted the impact on families and communities, saying, “They’re going after people who are law-abiding, who are holding down jobs, who have families here who may have been here for a decade or two decades.”
Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Colombia appear to be easing. Colombia announced it would resume accepting U.S. deportation flights after initially refusing two, a standoff that led to mutual threats of tariff hikes. Analysts warn that such measures could raise prices for American consumers.
Political strategists remain divided over President Trump’s approach, with supporters describing him as a decisive leader and critics accusing him of using bullying tactics.
