Trump hosts Zelenskyy at White House amid Ukraine peace talks

(NBC)- President Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House this week, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“It’s an honor to have the president of Ukraine with us,” Trump said as the two leaders met in Washington. Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his “personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war,” underscoring the urgency of Ukraine’s push for peace.
The meeting coincided with a gathering of top European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who called for “a robust and longstanding peace.” Their show of unity highlighted a growing push from Western allies to secure a settlement that ensures Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term security.
Trump later revealed that he had spoken directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin and was arranging a long-sought meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy. In an off-mic exchange with Macron, Trump suggested Putin “wants to make a deal for me,” signaling confidence in his role as a mediator.
Zelenskyy presented a battlefield map during the talks, stressing that any agreement must protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and include strong guarantees against future Russian aggression. When asked what security guarantees he expected from Trump, Zelenskyy replied simply: “Everything.”
Trump said Putin had agreed to allow security guarantees as part of negotiations, and he did not rule out the possibility of U.S. troops joining European allies in a peacekeeping role. “When it comes to security, there’s going to be a lot of help,” Trump said.
European leaders praised the diplomatic momentum but continued to press for an immediate ceasefire. Trump, however, has shifted from demanding a halt to fighting, saying after his Alaska summit with Putin that broader negotiations toward peace can continue even as combat persists.
