(CNN) – President Donald Trump addressed the nation, using a prime-time speech to tout what he described as major accomplishments over the past year.
“We have brought more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history,” Trump said.
The president’s remarks focused heavily on his own record, while repeatedly placing blame on Democrats and his predecessor for ongoing challenges facing the country, despite Republicans currently controlling the federal government.
“It is not the Republicans’ fault. It’s the Democrats’ fault,” Trump said.
Republican strategist Kristen Soltis Anderson said the tone of the address stood out. Trump announced holiday bonuses for members of the U.S. military and attempted to address affordability concerns by claiming prices have come down. However, recent Consumer Price Index reports show inflation has increased.
“Prices have not, in fact, fallen, according to the broadest measure of the inflation rate,” said CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten.
The president also spoke about health care, as average Affordable Care Act premiums are projected to more than double. Trump reiterated support for an approach that would not extend current subsidies.
“The money should go to the people, that’s you, so they can buy their own health insurance,” Trump said.
Trump closed the speech by laying out his hopes for the coming year.
“When the world looks at us next year, let them see a nation that is loyal to its citizens, faithful to its workers, confident to its identity, certain to its destiny and the envy of the entire globe,” he said.
