Trump condemns Putin after record Russian air assault on Ukraine

(CNN)- President Donald Trump is speaking out sharply against Russian President Vladimir Putin following Moscow’s largest aerial assault since the start of its war with Ukraine over three years ago.

“I’m not happy with what Putin’s doing. He’s killing a lot of people,” Trump said Sunday, criticizing the Russian leader after a deadly wave of drone and missile attacks rained down across Ukraine overnight.

In a statement on social media, Trump wrote that Putin “has gone absolutely crazy,” responding to the unprecedented scale of the air assault, which Ukraine’s Air Force says involved dozens of missiles and nearly 300 attack drones. While many of the weapons were intercepted, officials say at least 12 people were killed—including children—and dozens more injured.

“I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin,” Trump told reporters. “I’ve known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don’t like it at all. OK?”

Trump also revealed that he had recently spoken with Putin as part of an effort to negotiate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“We’re in the middle of talking and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don’t like it at all,” Trump said.

The Russian strikes came just hours after a major prisoner exchange—the largest of the war—saw more than 600 Russian and Ukrainian captives returned to their respective countries.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took aim at the U.S. government Sunday morning, saying America’s “silence” is encouraging Putin to escalate the violence. Trump fired back at Zelensky as well, calling his comments unfair and misplaced.
