Trump administration faces scrutiny over deportation error and fed criticism

(NBC)- President Trump is facing new criticism this morning as both his immigration and economic policies draw national attention. Fresh images emerged of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador—an action the Trump administration now admits was due to an “administrative error.” Abrego Garcia, who has no criminal convictions, was allegedly linked to the MS-13 gang based on information from a police informant, a claim his attorneys and family strongly dispute.
Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador this week to meet with Abrego Garcia and push for his release. “Kilmar has his rights to due process,” Van Hollen stated, emphasizing that the Supreme Court had issued an order facilitating Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S.
However, the White House interpreted the Supreme Court’s language differently, arguing that it falls on El Salvador to initiate his release. In response, El Salvador’s president tweeted, “Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody.” When asked about the case, President Trump distanced himself from the controversy, saying, “I’m not involved in it. I’m going to respond by saying, you’ll have to speak to the lawyers.”
Meanwhile, the President intensified his attacks on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, whom he appointed. Trump has repeatedly pressured Powell to lower interest rates and, in recent remarks, questioned Powell’s leadership. “I don’t think he’s doing the job… If I want him out, he’ll be out of there real fast, believe me,” Trump said, following Powell’s recent warning that tariffs could cause a temporary spike in inflation.
Despite Trump’s frustration, the Federal Reserve is structured to operate independently, and Powell has asserted that the president does not have the authority to remove him.
