Troy Davis Executed for 1989 Cop Slaying
Troy Davis died from a lethal injection late Wednesday night. Today was the fourth time Davis had been up for execution.
Davis was convicted of killing an off duty Savannah police officer. His claims of innocence gained international support. Pope Benedict XVI, former President Jimmy Carter, and several others petitioned for Davis to be removed from death row.
Davis was convicted in 1991 of killing Mark MacPhail. Davis supporters say there was too much doubt surrounding this case citing 7 out of 9 witnesses recanted their testimony. No gun was ever found in this murder
Davis was put to death after a final attempt to stop his execution was denied by the United States Supreme Court.
The family of Mark MacPhail says they are finally at peace.
Troy Davis maintained his innocence until the very end, saying he did not kill MacPhail in 1989.
Davis made his final statement before he was executed at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday. Davis told the family of officer Mark MacPhail that
he did not kill their son, father and brother. He said he didn’t
have a gun.
