SOPERTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded Treutlen County a $300,000 grant to help fund construction of a new road off State Route 56 that will lead into the planned Georgia 16 Industrial Park.

“We’ve been bypassed for growth opportunities for whatever reason, and now I feel like we are in the game,” Soperton Mayor John Koon said.

The road, expected to be called “Soperton Drive,” will cost about $1 million.

The industrial park will feature more than 600 acres of space, and once it’s built, will hold all types of businesses, from manufacturing to export, and even a container plex. Potential businesses need not worry; the CEO of Treutlen County Development Authority, Sean Register, says the park can be customized to their needs.

“The layout is subject to change depending on what industry decides to locate there,” Register said.

Mayor Koon says the grant funding and road construction will help attract businesses from all over.

“We want to let the businesses, we want to let the manufacturers know that the city of Soperton and Treutlen County is open for business,” he said. “We are open to receiving their business and to be supportive in any way we can.”

Construction on the Georgia 16 Industrial Park is set to begin by the end of summer.

Planning for the road’s construction is still in progress, but once everything is finalized, Register says it will take about a year to 15 months to complete.
