Transparency and efficiency top priorities for new Macon-Bibb department heads

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Transparency and efficiency are two main goals for new department heads in Macon-Bibb County. Commissioners approved seven new leaders Tuesday night.

From Parks and Recreation to Facilities Management.

“I’m excited. I feel like our rec department has a lot of growth. We have a lot of opportunities in this community. There’s a little bit of relief now,” said new Parks and Rec Director Reginald Moore.

“I’m excited, thrilled. Macon-Bibb government is really moving, we’ve got a lot going on. We are excited about the future of Macon-Bibb,” explained Robert Ryals, the new Director of Facilities Management.

New faces are taking over some of Macon-Bibb County’s departments.

“I feel like I’ve trained for 10 years to do this job,” said Janice Ross, the new Clerk of Commission.

All new directors are listed below:

  • Sonja Adams – Animal Welfare
  • Spencer Hawkins – EMA
  • Marvin Land – Public Works
  • Reginald Moore – Parks and Recreation
  • Janice Ross – Clerk of Commission
  • Robert Ryals – Facilities Management
  • Captain Donnie Self – E-911

“It’s an honor to be chosen,” said Ross.

Ross started out working for the Bibb County government.

“When we consolidated, I became the training and events coordinator. I love events. I love putting those things together and, of course, I looked after the commissioners,” explained Ross.

Ross’ goal is to make Macon-Bibb more transparent.

“I want to work on our website. I want to make sure the agendas, the minutes and the things that we are doing are available,” said Ross.

Over at Parks and Rec, Moore is focusing on community involvement.

“I feel like we have not reached this community as a whole and that’s one of our challenges,” said Moore.

He also wants to reach out to people who may not be athletically inclined.

“One of the challenges I have been challenged with is to look at a STEM center which is science, technology, engineering and mathematics which draws a whole different group of kids,” explained Moore.

While Facilities Management Director Robert Ryals has a lot on his plate, he’s confident he can handle all the projects and keep taxpayers in mind.

“That’s my goal as director here. To improve efficiency, make sure that we are good stewards of taxpayers money,” said Ryals.

The only department that doesn’t have a director is Information Technology. A spokesman for the county said the Assistant County Manager is running it temporarily. Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert said early retirements is the reason most of these positions needed to be filled when he gave the department head recommendations last week.
